Why This Internship Stands Out

This is not a typical “shadow‑and‑observe” role. Over a 12‑week, fully remote engagement, you will become an integral member of an experienced Portfolio Management team, contributing to real‑world projects that influence decisions affecting millions of lives. You will apply academic theories to solve complex, multi‑disciplinary challenges, while gaining exposure to Cent Centene's cutting‑edge technology platforms, data governance frameworks, and stakeholder‑centric decision‑making processes.

Key Responsibilities – What You’ll Do Day‑to‑Day

  • Project Ownership: Lead or co‑lead short‑term analytical projects that assess the performance of health‑plan portfolios, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Data Exploration & Reporting: Extract, clean, and visualize data from multiple sources (e.g., claims data, enrollment files, financial statements) using tools such as SQL, Excel, Power BI, or Tableau.
  • Regulatory Research: Conduct comprehensive research on federal and state regulations—including CMS guidelines, HIPAA, ACA provisions, and state‑specific Medicaid rules—to ensure portfolio compliance.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Prepare concise briefing documents, slide decks, and executive summaries that communicate project findings and recommendations to senior managers and mentors.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Partner with underwriting, finance, clinical operations, and IT teams to gather insights, align objectives, and integrate feedback throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Process Improvement: Identify bottlenecks in existing portfolio management workflows and propose data‑driven solutions that increase efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Professional Development: Participate in a series of webinars, virtual workshops, and mentorship meetings designed to deepen your knowledge of managed care business models.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Maintain detailed project logs, standard operating procedures, and best‑practice guidelines to ensure continuity after the internship concludes.

Essential Qualifications – What We’re Looking For

  • Academic Background: Currently enrolled in a graduate program (MBA, MHA, MPH, MS in Health Informatics, or related field) at an accredited university or college.
  • Foundational Knowledge: Understanding of managed care concepts, health‑plan financing, and basic regulatory frameworks.
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency with quantitative analysis, statistical reasoning, and data manipulation (Excel, R, Python, or SAS preferred).
  • Communication Ability: Strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through academic papers, presentations, or prior work experience.
  • Technology Acumen: Experience with data‑visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, Qlik) and familiarity with SQL or database querying.
  • Self‑Motivation & Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a remote environment, manage time effectively, and adapt quickly to evolving project scopes.
  • Eligibility: Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship and able to commit to a full‑time, 12‑week schedule.

Preferred Qualifications – Nice‑to‑Have Extras

  • Previous internship or work experience in health‑care consulting, insurance, or public health agencies.
  • Familiarity with health‑care data standards such as HL7, FHIR, or ICD‑10.
  • Certificates or coursework in project management (e.g., PMP, Agile) or data analytics (e.g., Google Data Analytics).
  • Exposure to policy analysis, especially around Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, or ACA marketplace programs.
  • Experience with collaborative platforms like Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, or Slack for remote teamwork.

Core Skills & Competencies for Success

  • Critical Thinking: Ability to dissect complex problems, evaluate multiple data dimensions, and synthesize actionable insights.
  • Detail Orientation: Precision in data handling, documentation, and compliance verification.
  • Team Collaboration: Comfortable collaborating across functional boundaries, respecting diverse viewpoints, and building consensus.
  • Ethical Judgment: Understanding of confidentiality requirements and a commitment to ethical handling of sensitive health information.
  • Innovation Mindset: Openness to exploring new analytical techniques, technology platforms, and process redesigns.

  • Potentially earn a full‑time offer after graduation based on performance, cultural fit, and business needs.
  • Enroll in optional certification programs (e.g., Certified Health Data Analyst) at company‑subsidized rates.
  • Participate in a mentorship program pairing you with a Portfolio Management professional who will guide your professional development.

Work Environment & Company Culture

Our remote‑first model is built on trust, flexibility, and a commitment to work‑life integration. Compensation, Perks & Benefits

While the internship is temporary, we value your contribution with a competitive hourly wage ranging from $18 – $25 based on education level, experience, and geographic location. Additional benefits include:

  • Remote work equipment allowance (laptop, monitor, ergonomic accessories).

  • Eligibility for virtual training subscriptions (LinkedIn Learning, Coursera) at no cost.
  • Opportunity to earn academic credit, subject to your university’s policies.
  • Participation in company‑wide wellness challenges, virtual volunteer events, and community outreach initiatives.
