Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2025-11-03

About Sephora – Beauty Meets Technology

Sephora isn’t just a world‑renowned beauty retailer; it’s a thriving technology‑driven ecosystem where innovation shapes the way millions of customers experience beauty every day. As part of the luxury powerhouse LVMH, Sephora combines deep industry expertise with cutting‑edge digital transformation, delivering personalized, immersive shopping experiences across web, mobile, and in‑store channels.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: to expand the way the world sees beauty by empowering the extraordinary in each of us. To achieve this, we rely on talented engineers who bring bold ideas to life, champion user‑centric design, and ensure our platforms are fast, secure, and infinitely scalable. If you’re a visionary front‑end leader who thrives in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment, you’ll find a home at Sephora where your impact is visible across a global audience.

The Role: Principal Front‑End Engineer (Remote)

Sephora’s eCommerce Front‑End Development Team is looking for a seasoned technical leader to shape the future of our web experience. Reporting directly to the Director of Front‑End Architecture, you will act as a principal individual contributor and architectural authority, driving an ambitious UI strategy that balances performance, scalability, and maintainability.

This is a fully remote, full‑time position that offers the flexibility to work from anywhere in the United States while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams spread across San Francisco, New York, and Washington, DC. You will be instrumental in defining the technical roadmap that powers Sephora’s online storefront, ensuring that every pixel delights our customers and aligns with the company’s long‑term growth objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architectural Vision & Leadership: Define, champion, and evolve a comprehensive front‑end architecture that supports high‑traffic, high‑availability eCommerce experiences. Set technical standards, enforce best practices, and mentor junior engineers on architectural patterns.
  • Strategic UI Planning: Craft long‑term front‑end roadmaps that anticipate emerging trends, scale with traffic spikes, and enable rapid feature delivery. Translate business goals into technical solutions that reduce future rework and technical debt.
  • Performance Optimization: Own the end‑to‑end performance lifecycle—from initial design to monitoring in production. Identify bottlenecks, implement lazy‑loading, code‑splitting, and advanced caching strategies to consistently achieve top‑tier Web Vitals scores.
  • Security & Compliance: Embed a “security‑first” mindset across the front‑end stack. Work closely with security teams to enforce CSP, XSS defenses, and GDPR‑compliant data handling in client‑side code.
  • Technical Design Delivery: Produce high‑quality architecture artifacts, including component libraries, design system guidelines, detailed roadmaps, and exhaustive test strategies. Ensure documentation is clear, version‑controlled, and accessible to all stakeholders.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Partner with product managers, UX designers, backend architects, and data engineers to translate complex business requirements into elegant technical implementations. Facilitate seamless communication between distributed squads.
  • Mentorship & Team Development: Lead code reviews, host architecture office hours, and conduct workshops to uplift the technical proficiency of the entire front‑end community.
  • Innovation Advocacy: Stay ahead of the curve by evaluating emerging frameworks, build tools, and design patterns. Provide clear guidance on adoption timelines, risk assessments, and migration paths.

Essential Qualifications

  • 12+ years of professional experience building sophisticated client‑side applications using JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Redux, and modern front‑end ecosystems.
  • Deep expertise in HTML5, CSS3 (including preprocessors such as Sass/Less) and responsive design principles that meet WCAG accessibility standards.
  • Proven track record designing and delivering large‑scale, high‑traffic web platforms with a focus on performance, reliability, and security.
  • Hands‑on experience with build tooling (Webpack, Babel, npm/Yarn, ESLint) and modern CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong command of RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and Micro‑service integration patterns for seamless front‑end/back‑end communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead Agile or Scrum teams, manage cross‑functional initiatives, and influence product direction through technical excellence.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of presenting complex concepts to engineering peers, senior leadership, and non‑technical stakeholders alike.
  • Experience establishing governance around code quality, testing frameworks (Jest, Cypress, Enzyme), and automated performance testing suites.

Preferred Qualifications & Added Advantages

  • Experience architecting design systems or component libraries (e.g., Storybook, Bit, or custom solutions) that promote consistency across a global brand.
  • Background in e‑commerce platforms, preferably with B2C retail experience, giving insight into checkout flows, personalization engines, and inventory synchronization.
  • Familiarity with server‑side rendering (Next.js, Gatsby) and static site generation to improve SEO and first‑paint metrics.
  • Knowledge of progressive web app (PWA) standards and service‑worker strategies for offline capabilities.
  • Track record of contributing to open‑source projects or speaking at industry conferences, showcasing thought‑leadership in the front‑end community.
  • Professional certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional Engineer, or similar cloud‑focused credentials.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to align technical decisions with business objectives and long‑term product vision.
  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical mindset to debug complex UI issues, optimize performance, and devise scalable solutions.
  • Collaboration: Proven experience working in distributed, cross‑functional teams, fostering trust and open communication.
  • Leadership Presence: Confidence to influence senior leadership, guide architectural discussions, and mentor diverse talent.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable navigating a fast‑moving environment where priorities shift and new technologies emerge regularly.
  • Customer‑Centric Focus: Deep empathy for user experience, ensuring every feature enhances the shopper’s journey.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

At Sephora, your development is as important as the products you build. We invest heavily in continuous learning through:

  • Personalized Career Paths: Work with your manager to map out short‑term milestones and long‑term leadership aspirations.
  • Technical Budget: Annual allocation for conferences, certification exams, and training platforms (Pluralsight, Udemy, O’Reilly).
  • Internal Knowledge‑Sharing: Regular “Tech Talk” sessions, hack weeks, and architecture brown‑bag lunches to spread expertise across teams.
  • Mentorship Programs: Pair with senior architects and executive sponsors who champion your growth and open doors to strategic initiatives.
  • Global Exposure: Collaborate with product and engineering teams across North America, Europe, and Asia, gaining a truly international perspective on digital commerce.

Compensation, Perks & Benefits

Sephora offers a market‑competitive total rewards package designed to attract and retain top talent. While specific numbers may vary based on experience, location, and individual qualifications, you can expect:

  • Base Salary: $156,150 – $192,900 annually, reflective of your expertise and impact.

  • Equity Participation: Opportunities to own a stake in Sephora’s continued growth through stock‑based incentives.
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage: Medical, dental, vision, and mental‑health benefits with generous employer contributions.

  • Employee Discounts & Perks: Exclusive access to Sephora products, beauty services, and wellness programs.
  • Life & Disability Insurance: Coverage to protect you and your loved ones.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA/HSA): Tax‑advantaged options for healthcare and dependent care expenses.
  • Remote Work Stipend: Support for home‑office setup, high‑speed internet, and ergonomic equipment.
