About Caring for Cats:
Caring for Cats is a no-kill, volunteer-driven, non-profit cat shelter located in North St. Paul, MN. For 26 years, we’ve provided a safe, homelike environment where cats can roam, play, and receive the love and care they deserve while they wait to find their forever families. Our bright and welcoming shelter is cat-centric in every way—every adoptable feline lives onsite and enjoys daily enrichment, socialization, and attention from our dedicated team of volunteers. We are proud to be a community-supported organization committed to the health, happiness, and adoption of every cat in our care.
About the Role:
We are seeking a strategic, mission-driven, and highly adaptable leader to serve as our part-time Director of Operations and Development. This key role supports both internal operations and external engagement, playing a vital part in advancing the shelter’s mission and long-term sustainability. While the majority of responsibilities can be performed remotely, occasional onsite presence is essential for team engagement, relationship building, and operational oversight.
This is a part-time, 1099 contract position paying $28,500 annually, distributed monthly. The role does not include an onsite office.
Key Responsibilities:
• Promote a collaborative, respectful culture and help resolve conflicts when needed.
• Oversee the Operations Leadership Team to ensure smooth daily operations.
• Provide oversight of all operational activities, including preventative maintenance, inspections, licensing, audits, and annual state and federal reporting (e.g., 990s).
• Lead donor engagement efforts including acknowledgments, donor communications, and database management.
• Develop, manage, and implement fundraising campaigns and appeals, including securing matches and setting campaign goals.
• Build and maintain community partnerships and outreach opportunities.
• Draft and manage the annual shelter budget; ensure responsible financial practices.
• Lead the communications team and manage incoming email inquiries.
• Maintain and update the organization’s website (WordPress).
• Support volunteer recruitment and engagement.
• Troubleshoot donor database and minor technical issues as needed. Ensure records are properly maintained.
• Assist with purchasing, as needed.
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
• Experience in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, or operations (animal welfare experience a plus).
• Experience managing or coordinating volunteers.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• A passion for animal welfare and mission-driven service.
• Familiarity with cat behavior and basic feline healthcare.
• Proficiency with donor databases, website content management systems, and project coordination.
We are excited to welcome a dedicated leader who shares our commitment to helping cats and supporting the people who care for them. If you’re a collaborative, proactive professional looking to make a meaningful impact in the animal welfare community, we encourage you to send your resume and cover letter to [email protected].
