EMPLOYMENT IS SEASONAL, TEMPORARY, AND NOT GUARANTEED**PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Substitute nurses will be hired for both the programs listed below.Extended School Year (ESY) Extended School Year (ESY) offers specialized services to students with disabilities. The decision to provide ESY is made by the IEP Team, who assesses the necessity to minimize substantial regression and reduce substantial recoupment, ensuring effective progress for the students. The IEP Team also evaluates the level of needs and recommends specific IEP services during ESY based on individual student requirements. The determination of ESY services is made according to the IEP Team's identification, focusing on the student's individual needs and aligning with the delivery of targeted ESY goals and objectives.Summer Learning Academy (SLA) The 5th Quarter Summer Learning Academy (SLA) program aims to provide equitable access to high-quality academic and enrichment opportunities for students across Boston, utilizing the city's resources as an extended classroom. The program is designed to offer students an enriching and engaging summer experience that fosters increased school engagement, positive social, emotional, and academic growth, stronger relationships with peers and adults, and enhanced college and career readiness.REPORTS TO: Position reports to Health Services, the ESY/SLA Site Coordinator, and the Director of Extended School Year and Expanded Learning in the Office of Specialized Services.When you are hired to work the Summer Learning Academy (SLA) and Extended School Year (ESY) program, you are committing to the entire duration of the program. This means that your assignment may involve working at different sites, as staffing needs arise. Flexibility in location is an essential requirement of the position, and by accepting this job offer, you agree to be available for assignment to various sites as needed throughout the program.PROGRAM SCHEDULE ESY:
- The instructional hours for students are 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 5 weeks from July 7 to August 8, 2025.
Sites with SLA:
- At sites that host both ESY and Summer Learning Academies, students will be in the building from July 7 - August 8, 2025.
The Substitute Nurse is expected to:
- Be available for assignment all days of the program.
- Work a 6-hour day (this includes 30 minutes for student arrival and 30 minutes for student dismissal).
RESPONSIBILITIES:The Summer Substitute Nurse provides skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students as well as medication administration. Immunization surveillance and routine health screenings are conducted annually. Routine emergency care is provided for students and staff. If necessary, students are referred to their primary healthcare provider for an evaluation. For students with complex medical needs, the summer substitute nurse may act as a liaison for the school, home, and outside medical facilities. The summer substitute nurse promotes student wellness and assists in maintaining a healthy school environment.Responsibilities include:
- Provide emergency medical care to students in all BPS summer learning programs or Extended School Year programs at assigned sites.
- Provide treatments, including enteral (g/j tube) feedings, catheterizations, diabetes care, and seizure management among other student's health care needs per provider order.
- Assess, support, and report all students/staff (emergency assessment only) with all communicable diseases, following established protocols.
- Share Individualized Collaborative Health Care Plans with appropriate summer staff on an “as needed” basis to support patient privacy
- Administer and/or supervise the administration of prescription medication to students
- Conduct formal and informal nursing assessments of health conditions and develop accurate nursing summaries on students.
- Monitor and assess compliance with immunization standards as per BPS and DPH regulations.
- Develop and maintain contacts with medical persons or facilities who might provide direct service or consultation.
- Establish and maintain appropriate record-keeping and reporting formats and procedures.
- Maintain adequate and updated health records.
- Maintain and secure medication and equipment, and return to BPS or families as appropriate at the end of the summer.
- Communicate with students, teachers, and families regarding student medical needs.
- Be available for any health-related concerns during the arrival and dismissal of all students.
- Attend to health-related concerns that occur during breakfast and lunch, field trips, and other activities.
- Consult with teachers and related service providers to address students' healthcare needs.
- Participate in all scheduled professional development.
- Engage as a partner in planning and problem-solving.
- Perform other related duties as requested by the Site Coordinator or Summer Program Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
- Current Boston Public Schools Nurse.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Massachusetts licensure as a Registered Nurse.
- Experience working with students in one or more of the following areas:
Autism, Intellectual Impairment, Multiple Disabilities, Physical Disabilities, Specific Learning Disability, Emotional Impairment, Early Childhood.
- Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
- Experience in Extended School Year or summer learning programs.
- Massachusetts State Department of Education School Nurse License (All Levels).
- CPR & First Aid Certification.
- Current Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.
- Experience with support services in a school setting, liaison, and case management, and children and adolescents with high-risk or multiple medical concerns.
- BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
TERMS SLA and ESY:
- The individual who is hired to this position agrees to the 2025 BPS Summer Employment Terms.
- This position is paid hourly at a rate of $54 per hour of instructional time on the Boston Public Schools bi-weekly payroll schedule.
- This position is paid hourly at a rate of $40 per hour for the time estimated to complete all non-instructional responsibilities.
- Failure to report to work on a given day will result in a loss of pay for that day.
