Growing together.The Vice President of Healthcare Strategies/VPHS supports National Accounts and is an integral part of the Account Management and Client Development Teams. The VPHS utilizes Health Plan Manager Data, Biometric Data, Case Management program detail, and other tools to provide individualized analysis of existing Clients' utilization trends and future risk. Then, the VPHS provides strategic advice on selection and deployment of Optum clinical programs, integration strategies with external vendors, and relevant benefit design issues to achieve Client's goals. The VPHS provides advice on managing health threats (such as COVID) and on referrals typically for C-Suite members. The VPHS also intervenes in individual Member escalations to ensure effective management and the expected benefit design performance.The VPHS is prepared to deliver presentations to benefit staff, Customer employee populations, union leaders, and others on clinical programs, market trends, clinical benefit issues and other selected topics. The VPHS is capable of effectively engaging with senior executives on the above issues and acts as the “Company CMO” for clients who do not have an internal CMO.
The VPHS prioritizes the following NA Customers:
  • Premier Customers
  • Enterprise Strategic Account/ESA Customers
  • CTG Customers
  • Customers with a CMO
  • Consultant has a very actively participating CMO
  • Large Customers with critical B2B relationship
  • Customer is in an industry that requires having an MD engaged with the group such as Pharmaceutical industry and Healthcare Provider/System Customers
  • For potential new business, the VPHS is critical to NB Finalist Meetings and Capability Meetings by detailing our clinical value proposition, incorporating relevant programs across Optum and UHC and provides necessary specifics on the design, performance, and comparisons to market competitors. The VPHS applies critical listening skills to adapt presentations to Customer needs.
If you are located in West Coast US, you will have the flexibility to work remotely* as you take on some tough challenges.Primary Responsibilities:
  • Identify Customer clinical program needs and gaps then provides clinical leadership to Account Management Teams, Client Development and directly to large Customers
  • Responsible for clinical strategy and performance of clinical programs at Customer level
  • Advises Customers on benefit design, clinical program strategy, pilots, other intervention
  • Presents convincingly to multiple constituents including bargained populations, senior executives, benefit operations managers, Members, and Physicians
  • Develops broad understanding of both industry and purchaser trends in healthcare benefits delivery

  • MD or DO degree
  • Active unrestricted Physician State License
  • Current board certification in ABMS or AOBMS specialty
  • 10+ years of Clinical Practice experience post residency
  • 3+ years in Private Practice
  • Public speaking experience desirable
  • 5+ years in a senior leadership position at a large employer or national organization as the CMO or senior benefits professional; senior level Medical Director at a health plan or national level Medical Director at large Consulting House
  • External customer facing contact with large, complex Customer
  • Experience with wellness programs, telephonic member case management or disease management programs desirable
  • Solid knowledge of managed care marketplace, clinical program design, niche competitor offerings desirable
  • Familiarity with current medical issues and practices
  • Proven superior presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences
  • Proven excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Proven professionally appropriate written vocabulary and grammar skills, including the ability to modify for different audiences
  • Proven solid understanding of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) and managed care principles
  • Proven solid data analysis and interpretation skills; ability to focus on Customer’s Key Performance/Metric Indicators
  • Proven foundational windows-based computer skills, including typing, word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet applications, as well as internet research skills
  • Proven excellent project management skills

Salary Range is defined as total cash compensation at target. The actual range and pay mix of base and bonus is variable based upon experience and metric achievement.
