Job description: Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 15,500 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has 1 early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9th – 12th grade campuses. Instructional Support Teachers work in collaboration within their assigned building with administrators, district staff, classroom teachers, student support personnel, students and their families to increase student achievement using data informed practices.
The Instructional Support Teacher will be directly responsible to the Area Superintendent over Interventions and indirectly responsible to the building principal. Instructional Support Teachers will work on a year-to-year basis, as funding permits and building needs dictate.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Provide direct instruction to students identified for Tier 3 and some Tier 2 supplemental instruction, utilizing best practice instructional strategies and scientifically research-based, standards-aligned intervention programs in reading, math and/or social emotional learning, based upon student need;
  • Provide coaching and support to teachers on the implementation of district initiatives;
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop intervention plans for students that align with and support District-approved core curricular instruction;
  • Develop schedule for student intervention services, prioritizing time based on students with greatest need. Work with classroom teachers to minimize instruction loss during intervention services, co-teach as much as possible during guided reading or other appropriate time slots as determined with the classroom teacher to provide instructional support.
  • Analyze/Utilize data to inform instructional planning, delivery, and evaluation of the effectiveness of instruction for students receiving Tier 3 and some Tier 2 supplemental services to ensure that students receiving Tier 3 and Tier 2 supplemental services are making progress in the core academic and social-emotional program;
  • Participate in the problem-solving process with building administrators, support staff, instructional staff and parents;
  • Facilitate parent involvement activities building school to home connections for learning support;
  • Maintain and keep in confidence accurate student records, parent communications records and student progress data reports;
  • Attend and actively participate in regularly scheduled district-level meetings and professional development opportunities as determined by the Coordinator of MTSS;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal and/or Coordinator of MTSS

  • Sound knowledge of the Common Core State Standards, content, curriculum, evidence-based best practices and assessment procedures, with an emphasis on reading and math.
  • Knowledge and understanding of appropriate research-based intervention and support services.
  • Ability to interpret and synthesize data on student performance to develop diagnostic teaching strategies and to improve student achievement;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, listening, facilitation and adult education teaching skills;
  • Ability to successfully work in a collaborative environment with administrators, teachers, parents, and outside agencies;
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educators License, preferred endorsement in reading (Elementary Education K-5 or LBS1). Bilingual endorsement preferred.
