Visual Interpreter - Blind / Low-Vision Employee

- This is a remote position.
- As a Visual Interpreter you will be the essential support system for a blind/ low-vision leader.
- You will, in essence, be an extension of a blind/ low-vision leader in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department at a global technology firm.
- In this role, you will ensure equal access to information and resources within a professional environment.
- Your role will involve facilitating communication, organizing and creating accessible content, and providing technical assistance to enhance the productivity and effectiveness of this leader.
- Document Review and Interpretation: Read, describe, and interpret emails, memos, reports, or any other written documents, focusing on critical details such as headers, graphs, or specific formatting.
- Assistance with Digital Platforms: Navigate online systems, assist with logging into accounts, accessing files, and managing digital workflows, ensuring descriptions of visuals like icons, layout changes, and notifications.
- Calendar and Scheduling Support: Describe calendar layouts, assist with scheduling and rescheduling meetings, and provide information on participant details, meeting links, and agendas.
- Advocate for and ensure access to relevant documents before meetings: e.g. ask other meeting attendees for collateral to ensure accessibility before we must show up to the meeting.
- Real-Time Meeting Assistance: In meetings, describe visual cues such as presentation slides, participant gestures, and room layouts, along with managing handouts or printed materials.
- Presentation Preparation and Delivery: Assist in creating, reviewing, and presenting visual materials, ensuring slides, charts, and visual aids are appropriately described for your boss’s understanding.
- Form and Document Completion: Guide her through completing forms by reading fields and formatting information accurately, ensuring documents maintain proper formatting and alignment.
- Assistance with Communication Platforms: Help navigate platforms like email, video conferencing, and messaging apps, describing any visual indicators, like icons or alerts, for effective communication.
- Travel and Event Assistance: If work involves travel, serve as travel companion to ease navigation in unfamiliar spaces, keeping track of scheduled speaking engagements and 1-1 meetings or small group meetings, providing visual information during networking interactions such as room layout, findings food/beverages available, reading visual signage etc.
- Guidance on Professional Attire: Offer descriptions of clothing choices to ensure her appearance is suitable for the day’s agenda, describing colors, patterns, and overall presentation.
- Client and Staff Introductions: In an as-needed basis, facilitate finding specific people in events, and create ease for networking visually, this may include describing general appearance, gestures/non-verbal cues, information about relevant visual information such as names on name badges and any other identity information that is visually available.
- Email and Message Prioritization: Help prioritize emails and messages by identifying urgent or high-priority correspondence, summarizing content, and organizing responses as directed.
- Maintenance of Confidentiality: Handle all information with strict confidentiality, ensuring that sensitive or private details in documents or discussions are conveyed only as appropriate.
- Task Management Assistance: Support with task tracking by reading and updating tasks spreadsheets, identifying deadlines, and organizing tasks in a visually accessible way for ease of reference.
- Supporting Cross-Departmental Communication: Facilitate communication between departments by reading printed handouts, newsletters, or memos, keeping her updated on company-wide announcements.
- Proofreading and Layout Verification: Ensure documents and presentations are visually professional by checking formatting, alignment, and readability, noting any inconsistencies for correction.
- Discretion in Public Settings: In public or shared spaces, assist with visual interpretation discreetly, maintaining a professional demeanor to ensure privacy and comfort in various settings.
- Social Media/Speaker Profile Management: assists with all external facing profile creation/maintenance (Speaker profiles for engagements) taking pictures for events and assisting with Linked-in work related posts.
Requirements:
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey information and collaborate.
- Professional demeanor and behavior that reflects positively on the blind/ low-vision employee you are supporting.
- Strong attention to detail to accurately capture and convey meeting discussions and content.
- Proficiency in Mac and Windows desktop applications: Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Proficiency or experience tracking expenses in Concur.
- Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
- Experience in creating content that adheres to accessibility standards, ensuring inclusivity.
- Previous experience in a similar role, corporate, communication, or government settings is a plus.
- Previous experience working with the disability community is desired, but not required.
- Experience working with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) protocols is a strong desire, but not required.
- Must possess a valid passport and be willing to travel internationally as needed.
