Job title: Manager of Gallery Teaching Company: The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Job description : The Manager of Gallery Teaching represents the foundational and transformational importance of facilitated gallery experiences that cultivate social justice discussions at the de Young and the Legion of Honor. The focus on the craft of facilitation provides a rich and impactful space to cultivate the next generation of museum professionals who amplify the importance of equity and inclusion. The Manager of Gallery Teaching will steward and augment the Interpretation and Outreach Associates Program as well as contribute to department wide training efforts for volunteer Gallery Guides. This position also provides oversight for and is an essential stakeholder in managing and developing our summer internship program. Typical Duties and Responsibilities: * Develop consolidated training modules that implement visitor centered approaches that advance social justice narratives positioning the museum as a place for constructive dialogue. Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, and supports emerging art professionals working as Interpretation and Outreach Associates (IOAs). Collaborates on recruitment, training, and evaluation of two cohorts of volunteer Gallery Guides per year. Prepares and manages budgets for training and in gallery facilitation. Develops educational opportunities and materials to ensure engaging, experiential, and community building experiences for IOAs and volunteer Gallery Guides. Collaborates with colleagues across education to align professional opportunities and management approaches for IOAs embedded in Family Programs, School Programs, Public Programs, and Interpretation. Advises on social justice approaches for in-gallery facilitation across the department specifically in School and Family Programs. Builds and maintains connections, both locally and nationally, with progressive museum educators working across docent, youth, and school programs providing regular updates about approaches and impacts. Contributes to Departmental outreach efforts to augment visitation from community groups within areas historically underserved by the museum. Contribute to the production of social media and video content highlighting IOA and volunteer Gallery Guide voices to be used across the Fine Arts Museums including Exhibitions, Collections, Membership, and Marketing and Communications. Supports the development of the Fine Arts Museums paid internship program including recruitment, on-boarding, training, and mentoring. Oversees logistics of scheduling Saturday Gallery Conversations and IOA project involvement across Education. Documents and evaluates programs with statistics, photographs, and visitor surveys. Maintain and augment ongoing relationships with colleges, universities, and other community organizations for the purpose of IOA recruitment to deepen engagement with the organization. Minimum Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's Degree in art history, education, or museum studies Work Experience: Five years of work experience in youth development with a focus on art or similar field. Must include experience with supervising staff. Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated abilities in writing about and teaching visual arts. Track record of developing productive intergenerational learning environments. Knowledge of museum education. Demonstrated experience teaching with a social justice and/or ethnic studies framework Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Research, public speaking, and computer skills are essential. Demonstrated abilities to organize and be resourceful. Ability to effectively deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner. Ability to plan and direct the work of new professionals and volunteers. Must have a flexible schedule in order to work weekend and evening education events as needed. This position is on a Tuesday-Saturday schedule. The benefits package includes medical, dental, vision and 401(k), and paid time off. This position is eligible for a hybrid onsite/remote schedule. The annual salary range for this position is $77,000-90,000. The final offer amount within this range will be based on experience and internal equity.
