More information about UW Tacoma and its strategic plan can be found University Academic Advising at the University of Washington Tacoma has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Advisor, Senior. This position will provide professional academic advising to current and newly admitted first-year and pre-major students, including students who are exploring academic options, working towards declaring a major, considering a change of major, and those who are returning to the University. This position is expected to work on campus but may be eligible for partial teleworking. The Academic Advisor, Senior in University Academic Advising serves as a member of a professional team providing holistic advising services for undergraduate students who are: Clarifying their academic interests Preparing for admission to majors Pre-professionals Changing their academic goals The Academic Advisor, Senior uses professional knowledge and experience with University resources to empower students to identify interests and match personal strengths with educational and career opportunities. Important aspects of the work include asset-focused and learning-centered advising, understanding of the relationship between education and career, attention to detail, frequent contact with the University's administrative system, and active engagement with the faculty and staff in the academic program for first-year students. Specific responsibilities: (75%) Advising Provide live (email, online, by telephone and Zoom) one-on-one advising for individual students within an assigned advising caseload. This includes but is not limited to the following: Educate students about the relationship between their personal strengths and interests, and opportunities in the University curriculum and beyond Empower students to cultivate a sense of purpose in their undergraduate education Help students overcome challenges that hinder academic performance Assist students to integrate their educational and career plans, concentrating attention on developing universal skills Guide students through University systems to avoid or overcome administrative problems Foster student understanding of academic major requirements to facilitate successful realization of academic, personal and professional goals Counsel students dropped from the University for low scholarship Outreach to students exploring their academic interests (15%) Lead Serve as lead for advising services including pre-health and pre-law, liaison to Schools offering STEM programs (e.g. Biomedical Sciences, Healthcare Leadership, etc.), and teach the TUNIV 250 course. (10%) Collaboration Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with team members, major advisors, and campus colleagues (e.g. Admissions, Registrar, Equity and Inclusion, Veteran and Military Services, campus housing, Office of Undergraduate Education, Global Affairs, etc.), to help students integrate their academic, career, and personal goals. Participate in departmental and campus activities such as weekly staff meeting, Orientation, Commencement, and other program-specific events and workshops. Provide consultation to departments and programs throughout campus. This may include working on publications or serving as a resource for information and policy interpretation. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree and 3 years of culturally competent academic advising or related experience with students in a diverse higher education setting. Additional Experience: Experience advising students with a range of educational backgrounds including first generation college students. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to present information succinctly to individuals and groups; experience with public speaking. Demonstrated ability to work independently and work a flexible schedule with some evening and/or weekend work. Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, evolving environment. Experience using computer programs such as MS Word, Access and Excel. Must be comfortable with data and proficient with computer technology. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED: Master's degree and 2 years academic advising or related higher education experience. Successful experience in developing and providing programs/services of significant value to students and the institution.
