If so, then this could be the job for you: Canary Media seeks a copy and production editor to join our editorial team.The copy and production editor will be responsible for ensuring the clarity and liveliness of our written content, fact-checking our articles, coordinating the production process to ensure timely publication, and maintaining our style guide. They will collaborate closely with reporters, editors, designers, and other team members to uphold our editorial standards and enhance the overall reader experience. This is a full-time position that requires working Pacific Time office hours. Canary Media’s staff is dispersed, so employees work remotely. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented groups to apply.Key responsibilitiesCopy edit and proofread articles, social-media posts, and other written content for grammar, spelling, syntax, and readabilityFact-check articles, conducting research as necessary to verify facts and check citationsCollaborate with reporters and editors to refine and improve clarity, coherence, and overall quality, with a focus on making writing accessible to non-expertsEnsure writing adheres to our house style and editorial guidelinesCoordinate the production and layout process, including collaborating with reporters, designers, and others on images, headlines, deks, and social-media copyFormat and lay out pieces in our content management systemUpdate and maintain our style guideAssist in developing and maintaining editorial calendars and workflow processesContribute to editorial-team discussions about reporting and coverage plansQualificationsAt least 3 years of experience as a copy editor, preferably in an online media organization or digital publishing environmentStrong editing skillsExceptional command of the English languageFamiliarity with AP style Comfort working in digital publishing platforms and content management systems (e.g., WordPress)Excellent project-management and organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize tasksObsession with detail and a meticulous approach to quality assuranceWell-developed communication and collaboration skillsAbility to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, editing multiple articles a dayFearlessness when confronting wonky and complex topicsNumeracy — be comfortable checking the mathCapacity to learn new subjects quicklyCuriosity about trying and using new technical tools and programsA problem-solving mindsetInterest in energy issues and climate actionBachelor’s degree or equivalent experienceA sense of humor — even in the face of newsroom chaos and the climate crisisBonus if you also haveKnowledge of the energy industry, climatetech, venture capital, climate and energy policy, and/or environmental justiceUnderstanding of digital-media metrics and SEOAbility to create and edit imagesCompensationThe salary range for this role is $70,000–$85,000, depending on skills and experience. Salary to be determined by considering a candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
