The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Transportation Technician 3 to join our team in Union Gap, WA. In this role, you will play a key role in ensuring accurate development, reporting, and delivery of the region’s highway construction program. Responsibilities include assisting with project initiation, monitoring and reporting on scope, schedule, and budget, maintaining project data in Unifier Capital Connect, supporting development of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), the region’s multi-year delivery plan, and the biennial Capital Improvement and Preservation Program (CIPP). This is the skilled journey level within the Transportation Technician series, at this level you will be expected to exercise initiative and judgement in carrying out multiple assignments simultaneously according to established policies, procedures, and standards. Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively coordinate information and communication across multiple programs and teams. This position is an integral part of WSDOT’s efforts to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options that support thriving communities and economic vitality. What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician 3 will: • Assist with project summary documents and managing and updating project schedules and project delivery. • Utilize the current project management reporting system to assist in accurately and timely entering, updating, and managing various documents and information required to complete project summary documents. • Assist with administration of the STIP program and documents (creation, updating and submitting STIP records to Metropolitan and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations). • Assist with developing and updating various project status reports by utilizing a variety of sources, programs, and applications. • Utilize multiple programs, applications, and databases to pull current project schedule/ milestone date information to assess and report on. • Assist the Program Management-Project Control group with inputting, editing, and updating projects into Capital project control system. Qualifications This is a Transportation Technician 3 (TT3) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level (TT2 or TT1) depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan. To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required: • Respect and Equity: Demonstrated ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. • Technical Engineering: Experience performing basic or semi-skilled technical engineering work such as drafting, surveying, or plan development with accuracy and/or relevant certifications such as an Engineer-in-Training. • Technology Proficiency: Skilled in operating personal computers and software, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and program management-related applications. • Analytical & Problem-Solving Abilities: Capable of understanding programming structures, interpreting technical data, and applying information to ensure accuracy and compliance with established standards. • Communication Skills: Skills to effectively communicate in person, electronically, by phone, and in writing with coworkers, WSDOT staff, local agencies, and the public. • Collaboration & Adaptability: Skills to work productively in a team environment under tight deadlines and shifting priorities, producing accurate and consistent results. In addition to the above, the following are also required: • A valid driver’s license with the ability to operate state-owned vehicles. • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: • Advanced Technical Expertise: Experience in alternative engineering disciplines such as design, construction (testing and inspection), construction management, planning, or financial services, accounting, maintenance, office administration, or similar. • Project Management & Reporting: Experience in data organization, assembly, review and accurate entry into a program or system. • Technology Proficiency: Experience organizing and manipulating data in spreadsheets or similar such as MS Excel utilizing basic to advanced formulas and functions. Important Notes • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options. • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code. • This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Transportation Technician 3 level, however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as a Transportation Technician 2 or Transportation Technician 1, if not qualified at the highest level. The salaries for each are below: • Transportation Technician 3: $64,776 – $87,048 Annually • Transportation Technician 2: $55,836 – $75,108 Annually • Transportation Technician 1: $47,100 – $63,252 Annually • WSDOT does not use the E-Verify system, therefore we are not eligible to extend STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT).
