About us Hola Cultura is a vibrant, multifaceted nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., that celebrates the culture and contributions of Latinos in society today. We produce independent media coverage of Latino arts and culture, conduct original research and host events that showcase our diverse community. Through this work, we lift up Latino voices, break down barriers, and promote cross-cultural understanding; while mentoring and providing professional training in essential 21st-century communication and digital workforce skills to Latino youth and young adults. Your role • **While Hola Cultura is a Washington, D.C., organization, candidates do not need to be based in D.C. to be considered. Stipends are available for participants living in Washington, D.C.*** As a Copy Editing Intern in our Storytelling Program for Experiential Learning (SPEL), for young people between the ages of 16 and 25, you will be part of a storytelling team focusing on topic areas, such as D.C. area arts and humanities and Latino cultural initiatives, social and environmental justice, the Afro-Latino Experience and more. SPEL meets remotely every Tuesday for professional development training and collaborative story lab sessions. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism or related communication fields. Requirements • Attendance at online meetings every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time; and an additional 3-5 hours of remote work hours per week • Strong teamwork skills, as well as an ability to work independently and meet deadlines • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English • Bachelor's degree or coursework toward a degree in Journalism, Communications, or other relevant field, a plus • Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills, a plus • Familiarity with AP Style, a plus • Social media management, video and podcast production, and multi-platform editing, are a plus • A commitment to accuracy and an ability to remain objective and engage with people of all viewpoints • Commitment to the organization’s mission and goals • Duties and responsibilities Responsibilities With guidance from the organization's Professional Development Staff, Editors, and Editorial Fellows, Editorial Interns will: • Attend the 90-minute remote meetings every Tuesday and actively participate in professional development activities and story lab sessions • Work in a team to copyedit stories for publication, video and podcast scripts • Carry out weekly remote assignments related to story production or professional development each week • Serve as peer mentors to younger Interns • Collaborate with other SPEL story team members on special projects • Other duties, as needed. Professional development & weekly stipend: Internships are volunteer positions for high school and college students and other young adults under the age of 26, who are interested in journalism, PR, communications, and related fields. SPEL Internships provide professional training and hands-on journalism experience, as well as the opportunity to build a portfolio of published work promoting Hola Cultura and the organization's online magazine (www.holacultura.com) that attracts around 10,000 readers each month and has worked with larger media outlets including the Washington City Paper, WTOP radio and WAMU/DCist, Washington's NPR station. Interns located in Washington, D.C., also receive a volunteer stipend of $20 per week; stipends for out-of-state Interns subject to available funding. Remote meetings: Hola Cultura is located in Washington, D.C., but SPEL operates remotely on the Zoom platform. Candidates do not need to be based in Washington to be considered, but must be available for our weekly Zoom meeting on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
