Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Accountant V to supervise and participate in complex accounting programs, design and revise aspects of our accounting system, and prepare control records and financial statements for Judiciary funds. This is a senior-level accounting role that requires a strong technical skillset, excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, and effective communication and leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and participate in major accounting programs, including financial statement preparation and account reconciliations
  • Design and revise aspects of the Judiciary's accounting system to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Prepare control records and financial statements for all Judiciary funds, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant laws and regulations
  • Analyze financial data and identify trends, issues, and areas for improvement
  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to enhance internal controls and risk management
  • Collaborate with other teams, including finance, budget, and operations, to achieve organizational goals
  • Provide guidance and training to junior staff members on accounting principles, policies, and procedures

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum of 12 semester hours in accounting and/or auditing
  • Three and a half years of professional accounting or auditing experience, which may include teaching accounting at the university level
  • Strong technical knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting requirements
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a focus on collaboration and customer service

Preferred Qualifications

We prefer candidates with:

  • Master's degree in accounting or a related field
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification
  • Experience with financial management systems, including financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Knowledge of Hawaii state laws and regulations related to accounting and finance

Substitutions Allowed

Substitutions for education and experience are allowed as follows:

  • Professional accounting or auditing experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours in accounting subjects may be substituted for one-half year of accounting experience
  • Possession of a Master's degree in accounting may be substituted for two years of accounting experience
  • CPA certification may be used to qualify for education and accounting experience requirements
