The Camera Hardware Engineering group at Apple is on the lookout for an experienced Optical Illumination Engineer to join our team. As an Optical Illumination Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the development and system-level integration of new illumination components, such as camera flash, for Apple products. Key Responsibilities

  • Model and optimize the performance and appearance of various illumination systems involving LEDs, lenses, coatings, diffusers, and light guides.
  • Communicate your optical simulation results effectively to cross-functional teams, ensuring seamless integration of illumination components into Apple products.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering and product design teams to address manufacturing and system integration constraints, driving designs into production.
  • Work closely with suppliers on prototypes, troubleshoot issues by defining proper metrology, and analyze data to make informed decisions.
  • Characterize the optical behavior of materials, surfaces, and light sources to enhance the accuracy and reliability of our optical models.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of new design concepts and optical technologies, staying at the forefront of innovation.

Essential Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant field of study.
  • At least 3 years of related work or academic experience, demonstrating a strong foundation in optical engineering principles.
  • Experience with non-sequential optical simulation tools such as LightTools, FRED, SPEOS, or Zemax.

Preferred Qualifications

While not mandatory, having the following qualifications can significantly enhance your candidacy:

  • A Master's or PhD degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant field, showcasing advanced knowledge and expertise.
  • Experience in optical design applied to illumination systems, such as general lighting, automotive lighting, displays, cameras, or optical metrology.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages like Python, Matlab, C#, C++, or VB to automate optical simulations and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with optical characterization equipment, including spectrophotometers and scatterometers.
  • A deep understanding of LEDs and solid-state lighting, along with experience in working with CAD software such as NX or SolidWorks.
  • The ability to interface effectively with cross-functional teams, supporting the integration of illumination components into systems and assessing the feasibility of new optical concepts.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, take initiative, and explore new ideas.

  • A base pay range of $143,100 to $264,200, depending on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
