With a culture built on psychological safety, continuous improvement, and relentless curiosity, GEICO invites bold, forward‑thinking engineers to join a hyper‑growth journey that blends the stability of a legacy brand with the agility of a startup.

Our Engineer I – Network Services role is a cornerstone of this transformation. Working completely remote, you’ll collaborate with cross‑functional teams to design, secure, and operate the high‑performance, zero‑downtime platforms that power millions of customers’ experiences every day. If you thrive on solving complex problems, championing security best practices, and delivering reliable network services at scale, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Why This Role Is Different

At GEICO, “engineer” means more than writing code – it means shaping the future of insurance technology. As an Engineer I, you will be part of a dynamic, fast‑moving environment where:

  • Innovation is expected, not optional.
  • Every line of code touches real customers and real business outcomes.
  • Collaboration spans geography, with teammates across the United States and beyond.
  • Professional growth is supported through mentorship, tuition reimbursement, and access to cutting‑edge tools.

Key Responsibilities – What Your Day Might Look Like

  • Secure Network Design & Implementation: Design, test, and deploy network services, firewalls, routers, and switches that uphold the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of GEICO’s information assets.
  • Zero‑Downtime Platform Maintenance: Perform proactive maintenance and rapid incident response to keep critical systems online 24/7, ensuring minimal disruption to customers.
  • Security Infrastructure Support: Provide daily operational support for security tools, including intrusion detection systems, vulnerability scanners, and identity‑access management platforms.
  • Troubleshooting & Root‑Cause Analysis: Investigate and resolve network‑related security events, documenting findings and implementing long‑term mitigation strategies.
  • Collaboration Across Teams: Partner with application, infrastructure, and DevOps teams to integrate security controls into CI/CD pipelines and cloud‑native environments.
  • On‑Call Rotation: Participate in a 24 × 7 on‑call schedule, responding to after‑hours incidents and supporting off‑hour deployments.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Create and maintain runbooks, design references, and as‑built diagrams to foster knowledge transfer and operational excellence.
  • Standards Advocacy: Champion industry‑leading network standards, reference architectures, and security frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001) throughout the organization.

Essential Qualifications – What You Must Bring

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Foundational Knowledge: Solid grasp of algorithms, data structures, and core computer‑science concepts.
  • Operating Systems Expertise: Hands‑on experience with both Windows and Linux environments, including scripting for automation.
  • Networking Fundamentals: Understanding of subnets, DMZs, VLANs, routing protocols, and firewall rule sets.
  • Cybersecurity Awareness: Familiarity with the threat landscape, common vulnerabilities (e.g., OWASP Top Ten), and mitigation techniques.
  • Scripting Proficiency: Ability to write and maintain scripts in PowerShell, Bash, or VBScript to streamline repetitive tasks.
  • Communication Skills: Strong oral and written abilities, with a talent for translating technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Problem‑Solving Mindset: Proven track record of diagnosing complex issues, developing root‑cause analyses, and delivering practical solutions.

Preferred Qualifications – What Will Set You Apart

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and hybrid networking architectures.
  • Hands‑on exposure to identity‑access management (IAM) solutions such as Okta, Azure AD, or LDAP directories.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation) and configuration management (Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
  • Knowledge of container networking (Kubernetes, Docker) and service mesh technologies.
  • Professional certifications: Network+, Security+, CCNA, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in an insurance, financial services, or highly regulated industry.

Core Skills & Competencies for Success

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to break down complex network topologies into manageable components.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in configuring security policies and documenting changes.
  • Team Collaboration: Comfortable working in cross‑functional squads, with a focus on shared ownership.

  • Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying current with emerging technologies, standards, and threats.
