As a Principal Software Engineer - Data Analytics Leader, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping our technical vision, leading cross-functional projects, and driving the integration of AI capabilities to propel our business forward.

We're seeking a visionary leader and hands-on builder who can collaborate with multiple teams to solve complex problems and architect cloud-native enterprise solutions. You will work on our most challenging projects, designing and building high-quality, architecturally sound systems that align with our business objectives. Your expertise in AI will be instrumental in expanding our AI portfolio, both internally and for our customers.
As a Principal Software Engineer - Data Analytics Leader, you will establish technical standards, drive Smartsheet's technical architecture, and influence engineering practices and methodologies. You'll translate business goals into actionable solutions, working closely with engineers and upper management to deliver results. Your exceptional leadership skills, technical expertise, and ability to communicate complex ideas will make you a valuable asset to our team.
You will report to our Director of Engineering, located in our Bellevue, WA office, or work remotely from anywhere in the US where Smartsheet is a registered employer.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead cross-functional projects, providing technical guidance and expertise to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Design and build scalable, enterprise-grade systems that meet our business needs.
  • Solve complex distributed systems problems and work with modern cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes).
  • Influence the technical direction of our group, driving the adoption of a comprehensive service-oriented architecture.
  • Mentor and guide team members on architecture and best practices, ensuring the delivery of high-quality solutions.
  • Collaborate with product management, UX, and other key areas of the business to drive strategic initiatives.
  • Drive the integration of AI capabilities into our systems, defining patterns and best practices that improve productivity and address technical challenges.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of software development experience, with a focus on building highly scalable and available applications.
  • 10+ years of programming experience with full-stack technologies such as Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript.
  • 2+ years of experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, etc.).
  • Experience developing, documenting, and supporting REST APIs.
  • 1.5+ years of experience designing, building, and maintaining AI-augmented features for enterprise SaaS products.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Legally eligible to work in the US on an ongoing basis.

Smartsheet provides a competitive base salary range for roles that may be hired in different geographic areas we are licensed to operate our business from. Actual compensation is determined by several factors, including level of professional, educational experience, skills, and specific candidate location. In addition, this role will be eligible for a market-competitive incentive opportunity.

US Base Salary Pay Range
$200,000$270,000 USD
